Learn about the Smoking Vehicle Assistance Program

The Smoking Vehicle Assistance Program was established by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to improve air quality and respiratory health by reducing the number of smoking vehicles on the road. The program provides Bay Area residents with a one-stop resource for information on repairing, retiring, or reporting smoking vehicles.

Program goals

  • Educate the public on the negative impact heavy-polluting vehicles have on air quality and respiratory health
  • Connect owners of older, polluting vehicles to Air District and State repair and retirement assistance programs
  • Enlist Clean Air Advocates to report smoking vehicles so the Air District can send their owners information on assistance programs

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District serves the seven San Francisco Bay Area counties, which include Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara, as well as southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma. Learn more about the Air District at www.baaqmd.gov.
